4th Step & step 4 moral inventory. Step 5 and 5th step prayers.
Step 4 (We) made a searching and fearless moral inventory

The Twelve Steps, Step 4, fearless moral inventory by Yue Yu China, for The-12- Steps.com
Art: searching and fearless, by Yue Yu, China, for The-Twelve-Steps.com
Note: Stop thinking! Just sit down and write from your heart!
Shortcomings, relationships, resentments list, family, and
if applicable - how have I neglected my relationship with God?
PS: moral inventory is not just on bad things, but on all the good as well. We are trying to identify our true selves in this step, good and bad.
Humility is a balance in reality. In step 4 it is essential that we focus on our moral strengths too!
STOP: what does "MORAL" mean?
#1, it DOES NOT mean: poor, bad, or lac of;
it just means knowing the difference between right and wrong.
Moral = Latin moralitas or our "proper behavior" including BOTH good to bad.
So, write on past and present, on what we did, where we excelled, or fell short.
I.e.; We helped and loved mom, and then we robbed money to get drunk / high. We look at both the good and the bad.

Steps 4 and 5 take an all new self...

step 5 an open honest mouth!
Step 4 takes open eyes and step 5 an open honest mouth!
Step 5, admitted to God, ourselves and another to another the exact nature of our wrongs.
Step 5, our old self-image is destroyed via "admitting"

The Twelve Steps, Step 5, Honest self-image is key to seeing a truthful balance of who we are, which is real humility. We must look to our strengths morally not just where we fell short in the past.
For many this an all new act of humility. For others, it's natural to admit the past. In any case it is highly recommended by all 12 step fellowships literature to take our fourth steps and not delay.
We need to "clean house" and not delay. Often it's a sponsor, sometimes another we don't even know. In all cases it's someone trusted. Just do it! But remember, if you've a 4th step written down somewhere, your significant others are bound to eventually find it and read it! Ooooops!
If unsure of who to ask...try any minister at the church / temple housing your favorite meeting. Many choose Catholic priests as they are 1) bound to secrecy 2) have heard it all before many times 2B) they hear confession or "reconciliation" for a living! 3) Bill Wilson went this route, with Fr. Ed Dowling, and radio personality of the 1940s and 50s; New York's Archbishop Fulton Sheen or 4) Benedictine Monks: They live in silence for the most part, and live by the 12 steps of humility, the original 12 steps, written 1500 years ago. Or 5) a Buddhist monk, as they practice disclosure to their abbots and are well experienced with balancing one's past and present with an all new focus on being here, now, in the present.
Or a Native American Shaman, who'll laugh and say, hey, I knew all that about you anyway...

We discover the attitudes, thoughts, beliefs, fears, values, actions, behaviors, and patterns - both good and bad that are the make up of our true selves.
We identify the defects that have been blocking us, causing us problems and causing our failure, but do not pass over those assets that lie within that make us wonderful and unique either!
We want to learn the exact nature our strengths and “character defects” and what causes us to do the good and the unacceptable things we do - so that once they are capitalized on - we can grow with new attitudes. This prepares us to live a life of purpose - where we can be finally happy with ourselves, others and our past. By identifying our moral strengths and accepting past moral shortcomings we are able to get back much of our self-image hidden for so long by our disease.
If you doubt that you have any good points or problems -- just think back to the last time that you felt joy versus being restless, at peace or irritable versus being happy!
