Ignatius on self-will; (1,500 AD thereabouts)
An excellednt 2nd and 3rd step prayer.
Take, and receive all my liberty:
my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess.
You have given all to me: to you, O Lord, I return it. All is yours; dispose of it wholly according to your will. Give me only your love and your grace, for that is enough for me.

12 Step or Buddhist...recovery via Sajja & 5th precept. Often used with the 12 steps

Step 2, God of our understanding, and 3rd step prayer Buddhist as sajja.
The "Fifth Precept" that all Buddhists, alcoholic, addict or otherwise, try to live by are:
5- To undertake the training rule to refrain from intoxicating liquors & drugs that lead to carelessness.
Many take Sajja, a 5th precept "VOW" which is imperative for a successful detox at Thamkrabok. where detox of alcoholics and now addicts has been done for over 70 years.

Native American 12 Step Prayer

A third step logo, Native American
Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind,
whose breath gives life to the world, Hear me. Heal me.
Before you I come One of your many children, I am small and weak.
Your strength and wisdom I need and your power to restore sanity lost.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the sunset.
Make my heart respect all You have made, any my ears sharp to hear Your voice.
Make me wise in step 10 that I may know all You have taught my people,
The lessons You have hidden in every rock.
I seek strength in this 12 step journey, not to be superior to my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy- myself and my disease.
Make me ready to stand before You with clean and straight eyes,
So when life fades as the fading sunset, may my spirit stand before You without shame.
The 12 Steps are ancient, here are the original principles by Rick Steinberger. From 520 AD, they have been used in prayer and meditation by the monks who wrote them and society...
AA 7th Step Prayer

Humbly asked Him to remove these shortcomings
Based on these principles, God, I am now willing that You should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that You now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me the strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding and to help others grasp this message of recovery, wherever I can. (AA Big Book pg 76) c AA GSO NY NY
Step 10 Prayer.
God give me the strength and direction to do the right thing no matter what the consequences may be. Help me to consider others and not harm them in any way. Help me to consult with others before I take any actions that would cause me to be sorry. Help me to not repeat such behaviors. Show me the way of Patience, Tolerance, Kindliness, and Love and help me live the spiritual life. AMEN( p. 78-80 Big Book)

An Atheist Asks:
Excerpts from the article...demonstrating the equal attention given all perspectives
Is our primary purpose to stay sober - or to find faith in a Higher Power?

an atheist asks: gnos·tic
[nos-tik] adjective
pertaining to knowledge.
2.
possessing knowledge, especially esoteric knowledge of spiritual matters.
I am an atheist. I am also a sober member of AA, and have been for over four years.
The first AA meeting I attended in Buffalo, N.Y., was one of the most unique and powerful of my life..... I have become aware of certain prevailing attitudes which I believe do considerable harm to A.A.s main purpose. The use of the word God, for instance. The book Alcoholics Anonymous goes to great lengths to appear accepting and inclusive of all....However it is clearly written in a moral tone, one more Christian than anything...Furthermore, while every individual is promised the freedom to choose his or her own idea of a Higher Power, the frequent use and capitalization of the word "God" and the wording of the suggested prayers, does not seem inclusive of the non-Christian concept.
...chapter titled "We Agnostics" ...crescendos in a cohesive pitch that casts atheism a a flaw that must be corrected...
We hear in meetings how God is doing for our fellows what they could never do for themselves...I am respectful of their opinions to the extent that they are respectful of mine.
...Conversely it is easy for a person to become frightened, or even hostile, toward that which is unknown. Whether you were raised a believer or not, try asking yourself this question: Does my faith (or, lack thereof) afford me the courage to put aside my fears for the opportunity of understanding something different?

Website Author: First; please, if feeling unrepresented by a fellowship due to an outlook on a "God" issue, simply go to www.aagrapevine.org for A.A. or www.na.org for the NA WAY, for articles in support of the agnostic / atheist. This website is not designed to support such issues. The 12 steps are for everyone, but to remove God, is to create a new version yet defined. For 1500 years the 12 steps have guided peoples of all lands to God, Creator, a loving Power greater than ourselves.
All are full members of a 12 step fellowship when they say they are. The majority claim to benefit from a relationship with a "God," but that's your personal decision. Be it a first time relationship or a rekindled one.
With 10s of millions of peoples in the same rainstorm called life, and all under under the same 12 step umbrella, there's room for all "TO STAY DRY!" (clean)...(FREE FROM OBCESSION)
Differing 12 Step Fellowship recommendations to the newcomer include that this Higher Power be greater than and loving.Be it sponsor, fellowship or a God, or even Gods. As a pal Dave U. says, we don't have to understand Step 2, to work it!
All are welcome!
Atheist 12 steps, one possible version.
- We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
- Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
- Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of the group conscience and humble spiritual thinking, as we it..
- Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
- Admitted to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
- Were entirely ready to remove all these defects of character.
- Humbly worked this step to remove our shortcomings.
- Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
- Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
- Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
- Sought through contemplation and meditation to improve our conscious contact with humanity and ourselves asking only for good will and the power to carry that out.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Prayer of Francis - Step Essence
Prayer of Francis
Lord make me an instrument of your peace…
Where there is hatred that I might bring love…
Where there are wrongs that I might bring forgiveness…
Where there is discord – harmony…
Where there is error – truth…
Where there is doubt – faith…
Where there is despair – hope…
Where there are shadows – light…
Where there is sadness – joy…
Lord, grant that I may seek to comfort rather than to be comforted…
To understand than to be understood…
to love than to be loved….
For it is by self-forgetting that one is found. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven. It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life. AA Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions pg. 99

The AA Big Book had a page on acceptance that has inspired many to prayer...
Acceptance Is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person place or thing, some fact of my life unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person place or thing as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God’s world by mistake; unless life is completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes. AA Big Book pg. 417 |

Native American 12 Step spirituality
1. Treat the Earth and yourself, & all that dwell thereon with respect.
2. Learn to rely on the Great Spirit, in all that you do.
3. Show great respect for your fellow beings and "Creator"
(and especially respect yourself)
4. Look at the past for the benefit of all Mankind, and as in fellowship principle of a power greater than ourselves knowing us.
5. Share with a tribesman, and Creator, telling all.
6. Do what you know to be right, Steps 6,7, 9 & 10.
(but be careful not to fall into self-righteousness: Step 12)
7. Look after the well-being of mind and body, as the ladder of 12 steps is sided by sides of body and soul!
8. Write down amends to be made and make them through the Shaman or directly.
9. Be truthful and honest at all times, especially in steps 1, 5.
(and especially be truthful and honest with your self in step 1 and 4)
10. Continue to take full responsibility for your actions in every new moon.
11 Seek the way by chanting, lodging, nature, and others. Pray for a closer unity with Creator.
12 Do these things and be at balance, and carry Creator to all in all for all.

You don't have a soul.
You are a soul.
You have a body.
The Twelve Steps Quotes
A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell. Lewis
First and Second Things, by: C S LEWIS
The woman who makes a dog the center of her life loses, in the end, not only her human usefulness and dignity but even the proper pleasure of dog-keeping. The man who makes alcohol his chief good loses not only his job but his palate and all power of enjoying the earlier (and only pleasurable) levels of intoxication. It is a glorious thing to feel for a moment or two that the whole meaning of the universe is summed up in one obsession, ... every preference of a small good to a great, or a partial good to a total good involves the loss of the small or partial good for which the sacrifice was made.
Apparently the world is made that way. You can’t get second things by putting them first; you can get second things only by putting “first things first.”
The more you obey your conscience, the more your conscience will demand of you. The more we will find ourselves, just for today, on "God's doorstep." Abridged for, www.the-twelve-steps.com and The Twelve Steps Quotes Booth 2011

Seraphim of Sarov;the silence of meditation...
Russian mystic and ascetic monk, lived by 12 steps...

When you pray be like the mountain in stillness, in silence; thoughts rooted in eternity. Do nothing just sit, just be; and you will harvest the fruit of your prayer….be ready to accept all things without fear, be like the ocean with stillness in its depths…
I desire to be all silence, all adoration, to penetrate ever deeper into God, and to be filled with God that I may be my prayer and give him to those who do not know Him. (a hermit from the silence)
"From solitude and silence are born tender contrition, and meekness; the activity of this latter in the human heart may be compared to that quiet water of Siloe, which flows without noise or sound, as the Prophet Isaiah speaks of it: 'the waters of Siloe that go softly' (Is. 8:6)."

"This is a sick man. How can I be helpful to him? God save me from being angry. Thy will be done."

I admitted for the first time that of myself I was nothing; that without Him I was lost. I ruthlessly faced my sins and became willing to have my new-found Friend take them away, root and branch."
(p. 13 BB)
"My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen." (p. 76 BB)
8th STEP
"We attempt to sweep away the debris which has accumulated out of our effort to live on self-will and run the show ourselves. If we haven’t the will to do this, we ask until it comes."

God help me to become willing to sweep away the debris of self will and self-reliant living. Thy will be done for this person as well as for me. AMEN

Show me the way of Patience, Tolerance, Kindliness, and Love and help me live the spiritual life. AMEN
(p. 78-80 BB)
10th STEP

(p. 84-5 BB)

Pray:
God, I'm agitated and doubtful right now. Help me to stop and remember that I've made a decision to let You be my God. Give me the right thoughts and actions. God save me from fear, anger, worry, self-pity or foolish decisions that Your will not mine be done. AMEN

__A "first" of anything is a
beginning, and so it is with the steps: The First Step is the beginning
of the recovery process. The healing starts here; we can't go any
further until we've worked this step. Some ... choose to work Step One
in a more systematic fashion. Our reasons for formally working Step One
will vary from member to member...
Whatever the case, it's time to do
some step work: to engage in some concrete activity that will help us
find more freedom... Our hope is to internalize the principles of Step One, to deepen
our surrender, to make the principles a fundamental part of who we
are. (Per one 12 step fellowships literature)
